The official exhibition opening of Bison Legacy: The Artistic Vision of Dwayne Harty and Capturing the Wild: Works by Carl Rungius was on October 26th at The Whyte. Included in the opening were live performances from Kali Armstrong and Jim Averitt. The Whyte is proud to present these exhibitions which will run until January 19th, 2025.
Bison Legacy: The Artistic Vision of Dwayne Harty celebrates the profound connection between humans and the iconic bison. Dwayne Harty’s expressive works document the bison’s remarkable journey from near extinction to cultural and ecological revival. His art, shaped by years of dedicated study, portrays the bison’s resilience and grandeur across various landscapes, from North American plains to European forests.Bison Legacy honours not only the bison’s resurgence but also the collaborative efforts in conservation and Indigenous cultural restoration. Each piece reflects Harty’s deep respect for these majestic creatures and aims to inspire renewed appreciation for contemporary conservation successes.
Capturing the Wild celebrates Carl Clemens Moritz Rungius (1869–1959), a renowned naturalist painter. Born in Germany, Rungius trained at Berlin's Kunstschule and Kunstakademie, specializing in animal anatomy. After emigrating to the U.S. in 1896, he became a prominent illustrator. A 1910 trip to Banff, Canada, sparked his lifelong connection to the Rockies. Rungius’s work, known for its realism and dynamic wildlife scenes, set a new standard in wildlife art. The exhibition highlights his evolution, showcasing his deep understanding of nature and lasting impact on Canadian Rockies art.

The Carter Ryan Gallery
229 Bear Street (Corner of Bear and Wolf)
Celebrated Cree Artist Jason Carter will be in the Banff gallery to talk about being an artist ‘outside the lens’ - once a prolific camera person working in Morning Television, Jason uses a different, more cinematic lens in which he creates his crafts. His ‘mediums’ are different as now they are stone and canvas but his POV has remained the same.
